Student Teaching Experience
In the educational profession, there is no doubt that there are a lot of people who wants to become a teacher by "mind" not by "heart". When we say teachers by "mind", those are teachers who entered the profession just because they think that it is the easiest job; or maybe because of the increasing salary and lots of benefits from the government. And I must say that I am one of those kinds. I want to become a teacher not because I love it, but because of the salary that I will get. I don't even want to become a teacher in the first place. But hey! Everything turned out to be unexpectedly different, all because of the school they called EUSEBIA PAZ ARROYO MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL.
Over the past 2 1/2 months, my educational philosophy has evolved and strengthened. My belief that schools should nurture the whole child was reinforced just as my belief that teachers have an unimaginable influence over their students was. I have witnessed the care that teachers and administrators show towards each and every student at the school. The importance placed on each individual student was refreshing and sometimes overwhelming. This is something that I respect and admire about the staff at the school. They work tirelessly to reach all learners, even if this means spending extra time brainstorming ways to do so, differentiating for students, or spending extra time, outside of class, with students.
During my first day of off-campus teaching, I felt like an alien lost in a different world. It was my first time to be in the said school and I barely knew someone. Argh! I don’t want to have an off campus teaching!" I’m sure I won’t enjoy teaching since it’s was our off campus already." those were the lines that I uttered during my first few days.
Teaching in front of the class is like performing in a stage in front of many people. You need to be confident with yourself. I feel so very nervous because I don’t know If I will do my best as a teacher. I don’t know how to deal and communicate with my students and other teachers but when the days are getting longer I feel so relieved because of the help of my cooperating teacher. I already applied the students – teachers relationships and vice versa. In order to passed this kind of journey you need to be patient so that it can give you the good outcome that you wanted. This kind of journey helps me to enhance my knowledge and skills when it comes to teaching. As a student teacher I already experienced what a professional teachers had experienced. You need to be observant and conscious of the time especially when you are in teaching. You need to be aware of your student’s attitude and how you treat them.
Here is the most exciting part, I was assigned from Mr. Lawrence B. Velarde as my cooperating teacher who handle Grade - 8 Emerald and Sapphire. He is so mysterious because he is very serious when it comes to teaching. He is a cum luade during his college days so I’m so pressured because he hold a degree. Everytime we talked I feel so very awkward because I don’t know how to communicate with him. Before I proceed in my proper teaching I had given a chance to observed my cooperating teacher. I need to be observant when it comes to teaching. He is so very excellent in teaching, everytime he entered in his classroom he only used chalk and eraser. He doesn’t used any books or modules to discussed. That’s why I’m so very impressed with him. Three days was over, observing was done. It is already my turn, I was kind of worried because I didn't know what will happen next. Will I enjoy teaching this students? Will they like me? Such questions are continuously running in my mind. But who would have thought that these Grade – 8 students especially from Emerald just changed my own point of view about teaching.
I’m handling Grade-8 Emerald and Sapphire. Emerald is the star section and Sapphire is the last section. Honestly speaking, I was worried about the Grade-8 Sapphire because I don’t know if they can easily got my lessons but I’m so happy about the outcome because they can easily understand and appreciate my lessons. Everybody was participating even in Grade-8 Emerald. They did their best to help me.
As the days passed by, we encountered many activies. The 1st was “BOOK WEEK and CAREER GUIDANCE WEEK” . We are the one who facilitated during this activity. We are there to have fun and relieve stress. We dance together with the juniors and seniors and EPAMNHS family. We dance, dance and dance with students and faculty. This is the most treasured moment that we will keep in our heart. And the last activity was “MAPEH DAY CELEBRATION”. Students and teachers are all busy a day before the said event. They are preparing for the event. It is expected that every grade level should present their prepared performance to showcase their talents like singing, dancing both folk and modern, acting/drama. We also facilitate during this event.
They made me so happy that I can't help but cry whenever the day of goodbye is getting nearer. I don't want to go. I want to stay and teach for a bit longer. But there is nothing I can do now but freshen up the glimpse of happiness I shared with my students. I will really miss them so much. In fact I really love to be with them. They are the best reasons in my life why I wake up every morning just to go to school. They just change me a lot. I learned so much from them as they learn from me.
I am not a dramatic person, but what can I do? These naughty students just touched my heart. They made me realize that I, Aira Marie B. Bismonte wants to be teacher not just because of the money, but because I love seeing my students so happy as they grow and mature. Because that's what teachers do best. We need to do our best to teach them how to be a better person, to change their lives as they change mine.
“Teaching is not an easy task”
